Dental websites are dense with acronyms. Most prospective patients have no way to tell which represent rigorous, third-party evaluation and which represent a dues payment. The table below is our working glossary.
| Acronym | Full name | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| ADA | American Dental Association | Largest US professional organization. Membership ≠ credential, but ADA-published guidelines are the closest thing to US standards of care. |
| CODA | Commission on Dental Accreditation | The body that accredits US dental schools, residencies, and specialty programs. Specialty board status downstream depends on CODA accreditation. |
| ABP | American Board of Periodontology | Board certification for periodontists. 'Board-certified periodontist' = passed the ABP. |
| ABOMS | American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | Board certification for OMFS surgeons. |
| ABP (Prostho) | American Board of Prosthodontics | Board certification for prosthodontists. |
| AAID | American Academy of Implant Dentistry | Tiered: Associate Fellow, Fellow, Master. Implant-specific credentials for dentists outside surgical specialties. |
| ABOI/ID | American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry | The most rigorous non-specialty implant credential in the US. 'Diplomate' status requires extensive case submission and exam. |
| ICOI | International Congress of Oral Implantologists | Global implant credentialing body. Fellow and Diplomate tiers. |
| AACD | American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry | Cosmetic-focused. 'Accredited Member' and 'Accredited Fellow' are the meaningful tiers — plain membership is not. |
| AAOMS | American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons | Professional society for OMFS specialists. Sets practice parameters and anesthesia guidelines. |
| ACP | American College of Prosthodontists | Professional society for prosthodontists; publishes clinical practice guidelines for implant prostheses. |
| AAP | American Academy of Periodontology | Professional society for periodontists. Publishes guidelines on peri-implant disease. |
| JCI | Joint Commission International | International facility accreditation (relevant for medical tourism). Verify in JCI's public directory. |
| GHA | Global Healthcare Accreditation | International accreditation specifically focused on medical-tourism care pathways. |
| ISO 9001 / 13485 | International Organization for Standardization | Quality management standards for clinics and dental device manufacturers respectively. |
| AAAHC | Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care | Ambulatory facility accreditation, sometimes held by surgical dental offices. |
How to verify any credential
- Go to the issuing board or organization's official website.
- Find their public directory or member-verification page.
- Search by name and confirm both the credential and the tier.
- Cross-check against the state dental board's license verification.
